Focusing Retired Energy: From YouTube Hype to One-on-One Reality

Troy K.

After recently retiring, I needed a meaningful project to focus my energy and time on. I had been following knife makers online, but YouTube videos glorify the craft and make it look like a 45-minute breeze—the actual process is much more involved than I realized. I booked a flight, got a hotel, and came out to see what it was all about.

I work best in one-on-one settings, and the dedicated attention I received made a massive difference. I expected we’d just be banging on a forge, so stepping up to a belt grinder for the first time was intimidating. But Andreas walks you through the concepts completely—explaining the angles, why a blade tapers, how to control the pressure, and how to correct mistakes like overheating the steel.

The atmosphere is super relaxed and comfortable, and he treats his shop as a private space strictly for his students. We established a real friendship while working. I definitely plan on coming back, and next time I want to bring my girlfriend to enjoy the class too.
